Producing new products is one of the largest environmental burdens. In our case we are talking about producing a new marine diesel engine or making a gearbox, but the production of a generator set also requires a lot of new raw materials.
The advantage of a new marine diesel engine, gearbox or generator set is that the latest techniques are used. These latest techniques are more environmentally friendly than the existing techniques, but you can still ask yourself whether replacement is the best solution for the environment.
The ecological footprint is the biggest by the production of new products. Especially if we take into account the efforts that must be made to extract the raw materials and the associated impact on the immediate environment. But also in the continuation of production a lot of energy is used and the damage to the environment is noticeable.
Giving a marine diesel engine that still functions well a second or even a third round is therefore a saving of raw materials. This also saves on the use of raw materials.
Reusing a generator set that has had very few operating hours yields a very large benefit for the environment. Here we take a generator set that we recently purchased and then resold as an example. This set was built in 2012 and had only had 200 operating hours. We can say that this generator set was as good as new given the operating hours. Replacing such a set with a new set would be a major waste of resources.
We have sold this generator set to Bangladesh. In this region, the power supply from the government is uncertain and people take care of the power supply themselves by means of generators. They can use a generator set like this well.
In this case a very old set was replaced (1987). This generator set had worked for many years, but was now damaged beyond repair. By reusing the generator set that was built in 2012, we were also able to realize an emission advantage. This is because the generator set is more economical and emits less polluting exhaust gases.
In addition to reusing generator sets, reusing a gearbox also saves a lot on the use of raw materials and the ecological footprint. A gearbox also has no exhaust gases or other additional polluting effects on the environment. We can therefore easily draw the conclusion that extending the service life of a gearbox leads directly to environmental benefits.
